Holy Child School

Situated on a series of levels on a hill-top, Holy Child School Guwahati has easily one of the best school campuses in the city. It was set up in the 1970s by the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco or Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. A worldwide teaching order founded in 1872 by St Maria Mazarello, it now has a presence in 89 different countries of the world.

Over the last couple of decades, over 2000 students have talked, sang, played and rehearsed drama under the red-blossomed Krishnasura trees and read diligently within the cream-and-green building facades, taught to be kind and from there to voluntarily give some of their time, skills and charity – lend a helping hand - to all those whom fortune has been less kind, taught the value of friends and their friendship, how to live and love.

The school houses kids from kindergarten to the 10th standard. The school has added another feather to its cap by this year adding a Higher Secondary Section, in the science and arts streams. Holy Child is an all-girls school which follows the Secondary Education Board of Assam. It is one of the older, English medium schools of this region. The school has a long tradition of Producing rank-holders and a consistent, good performance in the matriculation examinations.

The school has a great team of dedicated teachers who take it upon themselves to mentor the young girls into women who can take life by its horns and mould their own destiny into a design of their choice.

To make sure that the school churns out individuals and not women who are sad imitations of whatever is the norm, the school stresses on extra-curricular activities and provides its students a wide platform to showcase their talents. It follows the house-system; the students are divided into four houses – blue, yellow, green and red and several competitions are held amongst them giving them the chance to develop their latent talents and foster team spirit and unity. The school also has several clubs – Guides, the Junior Red Cross, Taru Mitra, the media club which provide the students an outlet to express their individuality and creativity. For the budding writers there is ‘Zenith’- the school magazine which is written and edited by the students. The school also has a novel concept known as the ‘Daan Box’; in which the students contribute some amount of their pocket money which then goes to charity, at the end of each term. The school also has a tutoring program where the academically stronger kids help out the boarders with their studies. The school also organizes charity drives, flood relief, seminars.
The day starts with a prayer and a hymn followed by an address by one of the Sisters. After the tiffin break another prayer session is held and then classes are resumed. The students are a model of discipline and decorum.
Holy Child School over the last few decades has conquered several pinnacles of academic excellence and has helped turn the little tots with unsure steps; clutching their bags and holding on to their parents for dear life into confident women-of-the-world. Playing parent, mentor and friend; the school has gone above and beyond its call of duty, becoming a haven for the thousands of students who have laughed, cried, danced, learned within its walls.
